By Anonymous In a December presentation given by Dr. Howard Cyr of the FDA, CDRH, in Cancun Mexico, the FDA admits that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has studies on file showing that those who get more sunshine may be protected from some kinds of cancers, including malignant melanoma.
Also at this presentation, Dr. Cyr revealed that the alleged link between tanning beds and skin cancer is getting weaker not stronger.
The presentation was given at "Solar Seminar V", a trade event, sponsored by Island Sun Times magazine, which is published by Vince Lorraine, of Flint MI.
Dr. Cyr noted that several serious flaws have been discovered in most earlier studies that condemned tanning as carcinogenic. He agrees with tanning industry spokespersons who allege that all these studies were done with the wrong lamps! In some cases, he says, the data was even misrepresented in the conclusions given for the studies. Several of these studies have now been denounced, withdrawn, or softened by their original authors, causing the FDA to commission new studies and to rethink it's position.
Dr. Cyr admitted that the FDA relied upon such studies when it formed the opinions about tanning beds. "Now the evidence is leaning in the other direction, showing many health benefits without the cancer risks once thought to be there", says TanningHealth.org spokesperson Lonn Dugan.
Because of these developments and admissions, TanningHealth.org aggressively disputes the findings of the 10th annual Report on Carcinogens (RoC), wherin the NIEHS again lists Sunlight, and Tanning Bed Exposure, as known carcinogens in humans. “Tanning Beds have never been proven to cause cancer”, according to Dugan. The NIEHS Study concludes that tanning is not healty only because it relies on flawed studies. Dugan says, "These findings have simply not been demonstrated scientifically. The organization should be ashamed of itself for making such statements."
According to the Mayo Clinic's web-site, sunlight can be healthy. We find these words there, "For the treatment of depression and Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) it is recommended that you (a) Increase the amount of light in your home. Add lamps or skylights and trim tree branches that block sunlight, (b) Walk outdoors on sunny days, even during winter, (3) If possible, take winter vacations in a sunny warm location."
Dugan notes that a sunny day produces more smiles per mile of sidewalk than a cloudy day. He asks, "How can that be bad for you? We rest our case on common sense AND good medicine, which is more than you get from the 'sunbusters' who want us all to live in caves and die of bone disease caused by light deprivation and vitamin D deficiency."
About the organization: TanningHealth.org was founded in November of 2002 to tell the world that Sunlight is healthy! The group cites famous studies and professionals from the FDA and Mayo Clinic to support its position.
